Illembe: Honoring Shaka Zulu

Ladysmith Black Mambazo's unique, spirited singing is a cultural treasure. Just listening to their unified voices in glorious melodic song, it's not hard to believe that you are hearing the heart and soul of Africa in musical form. ILEMBE (which translated to "The Greatest Warrior") is a tribute to legendary African leader Shaka Zulu, and includes songs that were inspired by his accomplishments and personal attributes. Those familiar with the group's trademark mbube sound will be right at home with this album, which features their melodic singing performed a cappella. As always, lead singer Joseph Shabalala sings the "call" portion of the songs with eloquence, while a velvety wave of low-key choral singing from the rest of the band provides the "response."
